what is cervical cancer?
According to WHO cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. In 2018, an estimated 570 000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 311 000 women died from the disease. In Ethiopia, where almost 6.300 new cases are diagnosed annually, about 4.884 women die from cervical cancer each year. This makes cervical cancer the second-most common cancer in the country, and the second-most deadly cancer among Ethiopian women.
Risk factors
- HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection
- Having multiple sexual partners
- Smoking
- Weak immune system/ having HIV
- Long term use of oral contraceptives
Symptoms
- No symptoms during early stages
- Vaginal bleeding (During sex, between menstrual period, after menopause)
- Pain during sexual intercourse

- Pap smear
- HPV test
- Colposcopy
- Biopsy
